Be a participant in the City's tree planting efforts! Through the City's free street tree program residents can request a new street tree. This program allows residents and the City to work together in increasing the City of Armadale's tree canopy cover, creating a more liveable and sustainable community for all.

All you need to do is submit an expression of interest and agree to water the tree over its life. City arborists will evaluate the verge area and determine an appropriate tree selection.

What Happens Next?

Once our Arboriculture team reviews your application, the project officer will be in touch to discuss suitability for the size and type of tree(s) requested and confirm your request. The approved applicant’s details are added to our tree planting schedule for planting.

What to plant

The choice of tree to plant is a significant one that will affect the surrounding environment for many years to come.

The most appropriate species for a location chosen by taking into account factors like;

  • Choosing a tree that will work best with the existing neighbourhood's character and landscape.
  • Local conditions - what is the soil type is it clay, rocky or sand.
  • Variability and diversity in trees species are crucial if we are to protect our urban forests from the combined challenges of diseases and pests and climate. Both native and foreign trees are equally significant.
  • Size - Is there enough space for a tree to grow to its ultimate size?
  • Strategies and master plans.

While requests for specific species will be considered wherever feasible, the City does not plant fruit trees.

Where to plant?

When planting trees, we take a number of things into consideration when selecting the location such as;

  • Checking shadow lines so they do not obstruct Solar Panels
  • Above and underground services
  • Proximity to light poles, roads, path and other structures
  • Sight of line
  • Trees grow and we need to consider is their enough room to plant a tree now and into the future when the tree reaches maturity.

Unfortunately, sometimes it's just not possible to plant a tree on a verge.

Tree Data Collection

Building and maintaining our City's urban forest is an ongoing challenge. Tree canopy can be lost via development, pest & disease attack and changing weather patterns. Over the next six months, consultants working for the City will be conducting a comprehensive street tree audit. The primary objective of this audit is to collect data on Council's street trees. This will establish a clear understanding of what tree assets the City has to date and help us make informed decisions for the future.
