What is the Strategy?

The strategy provides a framework for decision making on where public toilets (including changing places facilities) are provided and how the community uses them to ensure that the community's needs and expectations are met through thoughtful placement, design, and planned improvement of the City's Public Toilets.

Why does Council need this Strategy?

There are no recommended guidelines for public toilets or legislative requirement for local governments to provide public toilets. There is, however, a community expectation to maintain, improve, and provide toilet facilities at many of our public open spaces.

As a result, the Strategy provides the necessary guidance on the provision, planning, and design of public toilet infrastructure in order to provide environmentally sustainable and inclusive facilities for the community, as well as safe, accessible, clean, public toilets for residents and visitors throughout the City.

Are all public toilets managed by Council?

The City of Armadale manages 21 public toilets. Please keep in mind that there are other public toilets that are not managed by Council, such as those in shopping centres or businesses.

    What happens after this survey?

Before a report is prepared for Councillors to consider, all community feedback will be reviewed and analysed. A report will be presented to Council with recommendations and changes to the strategy based the on the key outcomes of the community consultations and input from relevant officers.

The improvements to the Strategy will continue to provide a framework for evaluating existing provisions, improving programmes, and reviewing proposed facilities, as well as guidance on what is required to meet the diverse needs of the community now and in the future.

    Why is community consultation sought?

A number of changes to the toilet strategy are proposed in order to implement key actions from the Corporate Business Plan and to bring the strategy up to date with current standards.  Prior to final adoption, it is recommended that the draft document be presented to the community for constructive input from those directly impacted by the document.
