Project Overview

The Armadale Regional Recreation Reserve (ARRR) is a proposed multi-stage development set to become a regional sporting and community facility servicing the growing population of Armadale and Perth's metropolitan south-east corridor.

The project will be delivered in stages to align with funding availability, site readiness and community need, helping ensure facilities are developed sustainably and when they are most needed.

Project Update: May 2026

The project has reached an important milestone, with planning for Stage 1A now complete and detailed design underway.

The City has secured $20 million in State Government funding for Stage 1A, subject to finalisation of the Funding Agreement. The City also continues to advocate for matching Federal Government funding to support delivery of the project.

Construction of Stage 1A is currently expected to commence in early 2027 and is anticipated to take approximately 18 months to complete.

Stage 1A: Current Phase

Stage 1A is the first deliverable component of the Armadale Regional Recreation Reserve and represents an investment of approximately $48.8 million in new sporting and recreation infrastructure for the community.

Stage 1A includes:

  • 10 outdoor netball courts
  • 6 indoor multi-purpose courts
  • Supporting infrastructure and associated amenities

Key activities currently underway include:

  • Detailed design of the facility
  • Finalisation of approvals and funding agreements
  • Planning and preparation for construction
  • Operational planning for future facility management

Subject to final approvals, construction is expected to commence in early 2027.

Future Stages

The City is currently focused on delivering Stage 1A.

A potential Stage 1B was identified as part of the project's longer-term vision; however, it is not being progressed at this time. Future stages will be considered separately following completion of Stage 1A and as funding opportunities become available.

The Full Stage 1 Vision

The complete Stage 1 vision for the Armadale Regional Recreation Reserve includes:

  • 20 outdoor and 8 indoor netball and basketball courts
  • Gym with group fitness classrooms
  • Offices and allied health practitioner spaces
  • Café and commercial kitchen
  • Function space
  • Changerooms, toilets, landscaping and car parking

The facility is proposed to be located along Armadale Road and Twelfth Road in Haynes.

Why is the Project Needed?

Armadale is one of Western Australia's fastest-growing regions, and demand for sporting and recreation facilities continues to increase.

Currently, many residents are unable to access local netball and basketball facilities due to a shortage of available courts. With only five netball and three basketball courts serving the City, there is an identified shortfall of at least 20 netball courts and 13 basketball courts.

This shortage means many local players travel outside the district to participate in sport, while others miss out altogether. Basketball participation in Armadale sits below State averages, and netball participation is significantly lower than in many other metropolitan areas.

The Armadale Regional Recreation Reserve will help address this demand by providing modern facilities that support participation, recreation, community connection and healthy lifestyles.

Community Benefits

The Armadale Regional Recreation Reserve is expected to deliver significant sporting, social and economic benefits for the region.

The project is expected to support approximately 319 full-time equivalent jobs during construction and 44 ongoing full-time equivalent jobs once operational.

In addition to providing modern sporting facilities for the community, the reserve will create opportunities for increased participation in sport and recreation, support local economic activity and provide spaces that can be used by a range of community groups and organisations.

Project Partnerships

The City of Armadale has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Netball WA and Basketball WA to support advocacy for improved sporting infrastructure in the region.

The partnership recognises:

  • The growing demand for sporting facilities in Armadale and the south-east corridor
  • Existing shortfalls in netball and basketball court capacity
  • The number of local players travelling outside the district to participate in sport
  • The number of people currently missing opportunities to participate due to limited facility availability
  • The social and health benefits associated with increased participation in sport and recreation
  • The importance of securing State and Federal Government funding to support delivery of the project

Funding

Stage 1A is estimated to cost approximately $48.8 million.

The City has secured $20 million in State Government funding for Stage 1A, subject to finalisation of the Funding Agreement, and continues to advocate for matching Federal Government funding to support delivery of the project.

Stage 1A also includes the City's existing $10 million allocation towards the Armadale Regional Recreation Reserve project.

What's Happening Now?

Current activities include:

  • Detailed design of Stage 1A
  • Progression of approvals and governance requirements
  • Operational planning for future facility management

There are currently no construction impacts associated with the project.

Next Steps

Over the coming months, the City will:

  • Continue detailed design throughout 2026
  • Finalise the State Government Funding Agreement
  • Progress approvals and project planning
  • Prepare for early works and construction mobilisation in 2027
  • Continue providing project updates to the community

Community Impact

There are currently no impacts to surrounding residents, businesses or visitors.

As the project progresses towards construction, the City will provide advance notice of any works that may affect access, traffic or local amenity.

Engagement and Communication

The City will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses through design, approvals and construction planning.

Project updates will be shared on this page, and any future engagement opportunities will be advertised here as they become available.
