Eighth Road Upgrade
The Eighth Road major upgrade will provide a new, tree-lined, median-divided carriageway between Armadale Road and Forrest Road.
The new road will consist of a median-island separated two-lane carriageway with cycle lanes, footpaths, and the construction of two new roundabouts. The entry point between Armadale Road and Wollaston Avenue will provide a District Entry Statement, followed by single lane for the remainder of the carriageway through to Forrest Road.
In 2018, it had been determined that Eighth Road was identified as a key strategic route that will support the growth of the Wungong Development area. It is anticipated that Wungong will create up to 14,000 additional residential lots, supported by a new commercial centre, new schools, and a major regional recreational reserve. This development will increase traffic volumes significantly, requiring the upgrading of roads throughout the new development area. These roads are planned to be upgraded incrementally, with Eighth Road to be upgraded as the first major key entry road to this development area.
The construction of Eighth Road Upgrade (Forrest Road to Armadale Road) will include:
- Earthworks
- Drainage upgrades
- Impacted underground services to be relocated
- Underground power
- New street lighting
- Road construction
- Landscaping (medians and roundabouts) and revegetation
The road construction works were initially scheduled to be completed in 2021. This timeline has now been revised with the design set to be finalised in 2024.
Armadale Road and Eighth Road Intersection
Throughout 2022-2023, the City has been in discussion with Main Roads WA (MRWA) regarding the implementation of the intersection upgrade works at Armadale Road and Eighth Road. The works were initially slated for 2023-24. The intersection upgrade includes several safety upgrades, including the installation of traffic lights.
Prior to MRWA’s commencement of this upgrade, the relocation of several key services such as Telstra, NBN, ATCO, and Western Power need to take place, which are currently delayed. MRWA’s works have also been impacted by the imminent disruption to train services on the Armadale line, and the resulting bus replacement services. Works at the intersection would cause disruption to the replacement bus services and increase congestion. As a result, MRWA is now planning to execute the intersection upgrade works in 2025-26.
Is this going to be another nightmare like the Armadale Road upgrade? First, we let the developers roam and build more tiny block houses to sell and then beg for the money to able to fund the road upgrade :-) So the locals could use them as they used to be before the rush for development. I like how everyone keeps repeating that Armadale is the fastest-growing LGA. Has anyone ever asked if the locals wanted that or are just forced by developers of the landowners to sell to developers and dump population growth and new housing lawns to successive governments to get easy money?
I am a senior citizen living on Eighth Road and ride a Mobility Scooter on the footpaths down this road. However, the on and off ramps onto the road can be pretty horrendous in some places and need upgrading as soon as possible. I use the footpath on Eighth Road, rather than the cycle path on Armadale Road because there is less noise from the heavy haulage truck.
Eve
Eighth road & Armadale road intersection SORELY needs an upgrade. I would say it’s the most horrendous right turn in Perth. Nothing else even comes close. People give up and dangerously cut across left turning traffic to escape the trap.
Please please upgrade eighth and Armadale as a matter of priority
Hello!
I live in Armadale and I have been told by a surveyor that when they upgrade Eighth Rd they're looking at cutting down the native Marri trees. These Marri trees have been there as long as Armadale has. My neighbors and I are finding this very concerning!
The Marri trees bring us joy with their beauty. They are also food/habitat for the critically endangered Baudin's Cockatoo, endangered Carnaby's Cockatoo and vulnerable Forest Red Tailed Black Cockatoo. My husband and I have counted 31 other species of birds living in the Marri's!
These trees are priceless to us and once they're gone it can take 50 plus years for new ones planted to reach close to that size.
Is there anything that you can do to please help us?
Will Armadale Road & Eighth Road intersection be upgraded to traffic lights or roundabout?
