Sustainable Parks Project

Combining the Dry Parks Strategy and Urban Forest Strategy the City is undertaking improvements at Kuhl Park (Camillo) and Don Simmons Reserve (Brookdale)

These works will help our parks stay green, healthy, and sustainable both now and into the future. Two key upgrades are underway:

• Hydrozoning by reducing turfed areas and installing mulched garden, making irrigation use more efficient.
• Urban forest planting in the newly created garden beds. Beautifying the space, improving local canopy and increasing available habitat for wildlife.

💧 Smarter Water Use Through Hydrozoning

By reducing underutilised turfed space and introducing mulched areas for tree planting. The City can adjust irrigation so each area gets only the water it actually needs.

This helps the City to:

• Reduce water wastage
• Improve irrigation efficiency
• Free up groundwater so we can support more parks across the community

It’s part of the City’s Dry Park Improvement Program, which aims to bring fairer water access to more reserves.

🌳 Growing a Stronger Urban Forest

Alongside irrigation upgrades, we’re planting hundreds of new trees to boost shade, habitat, and overall canopy cover.

We’re using a mix of:

• Advanced trees (30–45L pots) for instant impact
• Tube stock for long‑term, cost‑effective growth

This combination helps us build a greener future while keeping costs and water use sustainable.
